1. Get a demo of the software. Don’t rely on pictures that the company has on their website. You need to install it, or if it’s an online service  be able to login and check it all out for yourself to see if you really like the feel of it and if it will be able to do all the things that you  are looking for.

2. Check on pricing. You want to see if it’s a one-time price, monthly or yearly. Also, find out about future updates and if there is a cost  associated with them. Sometimes you buy the software but if “new” versions come out they will charge you for that but not simple updates to  the software.

3. Try to find reviews from other owners and what they are saying about the product. Don’t go by testimonials on the website of the business  selling the product.

4. Are they reputable? Are they making the software in their spare time? Stay away from places like that for the simple reason if they discontinue  the product or updates then you are going to be in a bind because typically programmers do not like going behind others to figure out what they  were trying to do.

5. Do they have a phone number for tech support? If not fill out their support ticket system with a general question or email whatever address they have listed and see what the response time is. Trust me you don’t want to be stuck using a product and find out that it takes days to get a response.
